Kuumba Expressions was created to advance the understanding and appreciation of the arts as a vehicle for the development of whole and healthy children and youth. It was also developed to use the arts as an intervention strategy for children and youth who are facing academic challenges. And the arts are fun!
Kuumba Expressions was founded by Ms. Afrika Abney, an alumni of NationHouse Positive Action Center and Bell Multicultural High School, as well as a college graduate.
She created Kuumba Expressions as a way to offer a variety of workshops to children and youth in her community. Ms. Abney has led a number of workshops for more than 30 years. She entitled it Kuumba Expressions because she believes that the greatest outlet for anyone to express themselves is through the arts. In fact, the arts are extremely important to the full development of every child. Our organization operational philosophy is that the arts, whether visual, performing or literary, are critical to the development of a whole, healthy dynamic human being, permitting self-realization and actualization.
Ms. Abney has had the opportunity to host these workshops in different neighborhoods in Washington, DC which have changed since the 1970s. Despite the background of the neighborhood and region, she believes that in every neighborhood in her hometown, there is a need to help children and youth in the community.
Kuumba Expressions greatest weapon is the usage of our knowledge and experiences of helping children and youth succeed beyond their classroom and school.
